When my friend and co-worker Shannon announced that her sons, Roman, age 5, and Jack, age 2 1/2, would soon be big brothers, I couldn’t help but secretly hope the baby would be a girl. I know it’s not politically correct to wish for anything but a healthy child, and of course I wished for that, but Shannon was already far outnumbered and needed some additional girl-power to balance out a house filled with handsome, charming men. Much to the delight of Shannon, her husband, Ed and big brothers, Roman and Jack, a beautiful, healthy baby girl was born on April 27, 2012.
When Jack visited the office a couple of weeks before his little sister was born, I asked him what he wanted to name the baby. Boy or girl, he said, the baby’s name should be “Hot Dog.” Stifling my giggles, I glanced at Shannon, who like everything else took this announcement in stride. She said, “Well, this name does seems to be sticking with both boys.” Fast forward a couple of weeks and big brothers Roman and Jack are taking their roles very seriously, alternating between tackling each other and kissing Nina Karen, their baby sister. Like her mom, Nina is tall – she is already in the 98th percentile in length (yes – I’m confident supermodel is in her future!) – and doesn’t seem to rattle too easily despite being surrounded by so many boys. I couldn’t be more thrilled for Shannon and her family. And, I can think of far worse family pet names than “HD” when Nina grows up. Congratulations to Shannon, Ed, Roman, Jack and baby Nina!
