Of Birthday Gifts and Partnerships

I remember the day my brother was born like it was yesterday. I was almost four, and besides missing my mother like crazy while she was in the hospital, I could not wait for them to get home so I could hold Michael in my arms for the first time and we could start our brother and sister partnership. Thirty-seven years later, my brother is a dedicated teacher and coach and a loving husband and father, and I couldn’t be prouder.

We were all especially happy to celebrate another birthday with Michael this year. But no matter what perfect gift I find, I can’t top the one he’s given me:  his kids, Michael and Madelyn, the best nephew and niece I could ever hope for. They are forging their own brother-sister partnership, and watching them together reminds me that those bonds last forever and need to be treasured. At this age, it’s all about joy – playing in the leaves on a fall day, working on grandma’s projects, giggling and horsing around, basking in the love of their mom and dad and grandma and grandpa and an especially adoring aunt. Thank you, Michael, for this gift, and for being my brother. Happy birthday, Partner.
