The Third Day of Autumn 2011

“Aunt Cindy, you know I’m only a couple of years away from going to college,”  my nephew Michael, who is nine, told me on Sunday. My brother and I looked at each other and laughed. “Michael, you have eight years until you are going to college,’’ I told him. “OK fine,’’ he replied, “Two years away from middle school, then!”

The arrival of Autumn is a reminder of the passage of time and even the kids can see how quickly it flies. It was a Morgan family reunion at the lake this past Sunday as we celebrated the third day of autumn. I hadn’t seen Michael and Madelyn, my niece, since the day before Hurricane Irene in late August. In the three weeks since then, Michael started fourth grade and Madelyn started second, and they seemed to have grown taller, more mature, wittier, and cuter.

It all makes me want to stop time for a few days and savor these warm days of early Autumn, and kiss and hug Michael and Madelyn a thousand times, before they’re too old and grown up for kisses from their aunt. Thank God for cameras and their magical powers to at least pause time and capture these fleeting moments of youth and passing seasons.
