The New British Invasion

During our time together in London, my friend Rob and I debated whether or not British English was invading American. We agreed that some British words were becoming more common in America, including ginger (slang for a red-head), chatting up your mates, cheers, queue, one-off, snog (kiss passionately), and arguably some insults like bloody, cheeky, bollocks, and dodgy. We disagreed on the word loo, with Rob arguing that in his circles it’s used as frequently as bathroom.

Despite minor differences in dialect, it was a relief to be among English speakers once again working so hard to communicate in Paris. I loved people watching in London. My most memorable and enjoyable conversation happened over lunch at a British Italian restaurant. Rob and I had the privilege of meeting Maximilian and his dad, Bengt, two entrepreneurs who have invented a water turbine which will unlock the power of the ocean and ultimately create a new source for clean, renewable energy. All I can say, in my best British, is that their idea is bloody brilliant, and the world will be gobsmacked when their product is successfully launched! Now excuse me, I have to go to the loo.
